restricting folder/file access except as served by website

Hi,

I would like to prevent someone from directly typing in the address of a file or folder, such as:
http://www.mywebsite.com/_Media

I would like to serve, for example, media only through the controlled channels of the HTML pages I create, and not make the files open for access directly.

is this only done via one's hosting system?  If so, does anyone know how to do this with cPanel?

Is there a way to achieve this through Sandvox?

Thanks.

It says "Avenger," but I am just a Sandvox user who has been assigned the title of Avenger here in order to be able to delete spam messages. http://davidneale.eu/
